Slidell City Councilwoman Pearl Williams won re-election four years ago the easy way: She was unopposed.
But the two-term incumbent from District G faces a vigorous challenge from political newcomer Rick Lewis in the April 7 election.
Williams, a Republican who is the only female on the council, has been endorsed by the Republican Party.
Williams, who holds no other job, devotes much time to her council job and other city projects, such as the city's year-long centennial celebration, which she chaired.
She bills herself as a full-time council representative.
She cites projects such as lighting Robert Boulevard and chlorinating the city's water supply as some of her accomplishments on the council.
Eight years ago, Williams said, the city had no way to treat water during an emergency, such as a hurricane.
"If the water system was tainted, we would have had absolutely no drinking water," she said.
Chlorination also combats hydrogen sulfide, a naturally occurring gas that creates black specks in tap water when it reacts with copper plumbing.
If re-elected, she said she will address drainage line problems in Brookwood, New Country Club and Country Club subdivisions, as well as street resurfacing in Country Club.
Williams, who has supported construction of a recreation building in John SlidellPark, wants to see park development completed in her next term.
Williams, who has pushed for reforms at the troubled Slidell Police Department, said she stands for honesty and integrity.
"As an elected official, I can't say 'I don't want to get involved because it's the Police Department,' " she said.
