Tiffany Parker, president of the Slidell Republican Women’s Club (SRWC), presided over the organization’s 2018 Annual Awards Night during which scholarship, leadership and volunteer awards were presented. During the evening dinner held at Pinewood Country Club, the following awards were presented:

The SRWC awarded a scholarship through the Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship Program. This annual award goes to a high school senior girl from one of the Slidell/Pearl River-area public or private high schools, who meets the extensive scholarship and community service criteria. Serving on this year’s scholarship committee were SRWC members Charlene Stein, Dee Webb and Michelle Duvic.

The 2018 SRWC scholarship recipient was Sarah Surla, of Slidell, a recent graduate of Pearl River High School. She plans on attending the University of Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and majoring in Nursing. Her future plans include becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Surla is the daughter of Allen and Diane Surla.

This year’s SRWC Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award was presented to S. Michele Blanchard, a native of Pearl River and current resident of Slidell. An attorney in practice in this area since 2003, Blanchard also currently serves as the St. Tammany Parish Council representative for District 13, where she serves as Council Chair. She also serves as Curriculum Chair of Leadership Northshore. She and husband Jake Airey, also an attorney, have two children.

The SRWC annually recognizes a Volunteer of the Year, and this year’s award went to SRWC member Karen Fandal, who has served in many capacities at the local and state level. She has several times served as president, vice president, treasurer, membership chair and newsletter chair for the local SRWC. At the state level, Fandal has served as treasurer and currently by-laws chairperson for the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women. She also serves as a certified speaker for LOPA, the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency.

In keeping with the Education and Leadership themes for the evening, the guest speaker was Eric Dubuisson, who is one of the current JAG teachers in the St. Tammany Parish Public School System. JAG, Jobs for America’s Graduates, is a national program to help students toward high school graduation.

The Slidell Republican Women’s Club also actively supports area Republican candidates running for elected office, and helps with teen Republican groups.

Prospective new members are always welcome, and can choose to participate in any of these endeavors and others throughout the year. Full membership is $30; the Associate Membership is $20.
