SRWC scholarships
With less than a month left to apply, the deadline for the Slidell Republican Women’s Club 2017 Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship is fast approaching, according to Tiffany Parker, SRWC president. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a local graduating senior girl. All completed applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2017. Scholarships postmarked after this date will not be considered. Named in honor of two past SRWC members who were outstanding community leaders, this scholarship will be awarded to a female, college-bound, graduating senior from a public or private high school in the Slidell/Pearl River area. The $1,000 award will be made to a student who has demonstrated good moral character, leadership skills, and an interest and concern for the local community. Every effort will be made by members of the SRWC to acknowledge the scholarship recipient during her high school academic awards night. However, official presentation of the scholarship award will be made at the annual local SRWC award dinner, scheduled this year for May 25. It is required that the recipient be present in person at this dinner to receive the scholarship, which is awarded on a one-time basis. Failure of the recipient to attend the award dinner will result in the scholarship award being withdrawn. Application forms listing all the required information have been distributed to the counselors of all east St. Tammany Parish public and private high schools. Among other criteria, a qualified applicant must be a full time student enrolled in a Slidell/Pearl River area high school; a graduating senior girl planning to attend a Louisiana college or university in the fall; have a 2.5 G.P.A. or higher; and can demonstrate public service to the community. A candidate should be available for a face-to-face interview. Completed scholarship applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2017, and mailed to: Slidell Republican Women’s Club, P. O. Box 1777, Slidell, LA 70459. There is no online application process. Those students interested in the scholarship should inquire in the counseling office at their school. If there are further questions, please contact either SRWC President Tiffany Parker, 985.788.7783.

Tiffany Parker, president of the Slidell Republican Women’s Club (SRWC), presided over the organization’s 2017 scholarship and leadership awards night held recently at Pinewood Country Club. During the evening dinner several awards were presented including:
The SRWC awarded a scholarship through the Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship Program. This annual award goes to a high school senior girl from one of the Slidell/Pearl River-area public or private high schools, who meets the extensive scholarship and community service criteria.
Kayleigh Reneau, daughter of Amanda and Terry Poynter of Talisheek, received the SRWC scholarship this year. She is a recent graduate of Pearl River High School, and plans to attend Southeastern University, where she plans to major in Political Science and Pre-Law. While at Pearl River High, she represented her school on the newly-formed St. Tammany Parish School Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council; and was a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honorary, and Beta Club. Reneau was not only a member of her local FFA (Future Farmers of America), she also served as area treasurer for two years for the National FFA, and will be attending the Louisiana FFA state convention this summer. She is proud of the “Pearl River Supports American Troops” project with which she works.
This year’s SRWC Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award was presented to former SRWC president Peggy Seeley, for her many years of community service to a number of organizations, while working professionally as a hospice nurse. Guidelines for this award describe that the winner’s qualities are to be “derived from lifelong achievements in leadership and service” to the community. Seeley’s community service extends to serving in her second term as the elected representative for District 8 on the St. Tammany Parish School Board; for serving as one of the Board of Directors for the Louisiana State School Board Association; and for serving at the local, district and state levels in the PTA organization. Seeley also served on the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and currently serves on the Chamber’s Education Committee. Seeley is often seen in times of disaster as she serves as Shelter Manager for the regional unit of the American Red Cross. Seeley is also a past officer of the District 9 Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pearl River, and she is currently president-elect of the three-parish VFW District 9 Auxiliary. Having raised six children and helped with her 14 grand-children, Seeley and husband Joe are residents of Pearl River.
The SRWC recognizes their own Volunteer of the Year, and this year’s award went to SRWC member Charlene Stein, who serves simultaneously in several areas. Her official role with the SRWC this year is Campaign Chair, and she also works with Ways and Means, Membership, and the SRWC Scholarship Committee. An active volunteer in several capacities with her church, she works with the St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church’s “Good Sams” (Good Samaritans) to help those in need; and she recently served as the president of the St. Luke’s Ladies Club.
Also at the dinner St. Tammany Parish Superintendent of Schools Trey Folse gave a presentation — an overview of the public school system in the parish — in keeping with the Education and Leadership themes for the evening.
The Slidell Republican Women’s Club also actively supports area Republican candidates running for elected office, and helps with teen Republican groups.
Prospective new members are always welcome, and can choose to participate in any of these endeavors and others throughout the year. Full membership is $30; the Associate Membership is $20. For more information about joining the SlidellRepublican Women’s Club, contact SRWC Membership Chairperson, Dee Webb, deewebb314@att.net.
