Local historian and author Bonnie Vanney will speak to the Slidell RepublicanWomen's Club during its luncheon Jan. 29 at Pinewood Country Club.

Slidell Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Bill Davis will be the guest speaker at the Slidell Republican Women's Club luncheon Feb. 26 at Pinewood Country Club. Davis will discuss the Affordable Care Act, as well as healthcare bills that will come up during the state legislative session.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m.; the program begins at 11 a.m.

The deadline to apply for the Slidell Republican Women's Club's annual scholarship is April 15. The award will be given to a student during the group's awards night dinner May 28.

The Pearl Williams/ Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a female student attending high school in the Slidell/Pearl River area, the group said. The $1,000 award is given based on good moral character, leadership skills, and an interest in the community.

The group said application forms listing all the requirements have been distributed to the counselors of all east St. Tammany Parish high schools. Criteria include: full-time student in Slidell or Pearl river area high school; a graduating senior girl attending a Louisiana college or university; 2.5 GPA or above; demonstrated record of community service.

Peggy Seeley, president of the Slidell Republican Women's Club (SRWC), has announced that the annual leadership and scholarship award recognition dinner for this year will be held May 28.

This event will be held at Pinewood Country Club, off Robert Blvd. in central Slidell. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for sign-in, with dinner and the evening program beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m.

The winner of the annual Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award will be introduced. Guidelines for this award describe that the winner is to be "derived from lifelong achievements in leadership and service" to the community.

Of the eleven applications this year, one winner for the Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship will be awarded. This award goes to a high school senior girl who will be graduating from one of the Slidell area public or private high schools, and who meets the scholarship criteria.

Like most SRWC meetings, this one is open to the public. However, reservations are a must. Reservations for this event must be made by May 26. The cost of the dinner is $25 per person. Any cancellations must also be made by that date.

Walk-ins at SRWC luncheon or dinner meetings are not guaranteed a place to sit nor a meal. Those not cancelling by the May 26 deadline will be billed if that reserved place cannot be otherwise sold.

SRWC officers for 2015 include: Peggy Seeley, president; Tiffany Parker, vice president and scholarship chairperson; Chris Koviach, secretary; Karen Fandal, treasurer; Charlene Stein, program chairperson; Lynn Walker St. Jean, campaign chairperson; Heidi Crouch, newsletter chairperson; Wanda Ricau, membership chairperson; Betty Hooper, hospitality chairperson; and Dee Webb, serving as both member outreach chairperson and ways and means chairperson.

The SRWC carries out many community projects and charitable endeavors throughout the year such as: The Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship program; the Literacy Project, through which dictionaries are distributed to area school children; and the prestigious annual Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award, presented in May of each year.

The Slidell Republican Women's Club also actively supports area Republicancandidates for elected office and teen Republican groups.

Prospective new members are always welcome, and can choose to participate in any of these endeavors and others throughout the year.

SRWC members are reminded that the membership dues are past due. The full membership is $30; the associate membership is $20.

Kaelyn Evans has been named the winner of the Slidell Republican Women's Club's "Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship'' for 2015. Evans is a recent graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell.

Evans plans to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge and major in speech pathology, the group said in a news release.

The Slidell Republican Women's Club annually awards the $1,000 scholarship, which is named for two past members, to a female student from the Slidell-Pearl River area who will be attending college. Character, leadership and academic performance all factor into determining the winning student each year, the group said.

Evans is the daughter of Dwayne and Leslie Evans of Slidell.

St. Tammany Parish Councilman Gene Bellisario has been named the recipient of the Slidell Republican Women's Club's "Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award" for 2015, the club said.

The award annually is given to those who "volunteer their time to provide service to benefit St. Tammany as a whole, and particularly the greater Slidell community,'' the club said in a news release.

The club cited Bellisario's work as an elected council member and, before that, as a volunteer on the parish's Planning and Zoning Commissions. Bellisario, a retired financial analyst for McDermott International Inc., also has leadership roles in a number of other groups including the United Way of St. Tammany; St. Tammany Commission on Families; St. Tammany Community Action; Slidell Memorial Hospital; Slidell Symphony Society; St. Luke the Evangelist Church; and East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce.

He is also a graduate of the 2009 class of Leadership Northshore.

Dee Webb has been named 2015 Volunteer of the Year by the Slidell RepublicanWomen's Club. The announcement came at the group's recent annual awards banquet.

Webb, of Slidell, chaired the group's Ways and Means and Member Outreach committees, the group said in a news release. Under her leadership, those committees surveyed past members to learn how the club could better meet its members' interests and needs, and established new ways to raise funds for group endeavors such as the annual scholarship it awards.

The Slidell Republican Women’s Club (SRWC) has scheduled two fall luncheons to showcase all Republican candidates for local and statewide office. Both luncheons will be held at Pinewood Country Club. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m., and the luncheons and programs will begin at 11 a.m.

SRWC functions are open to the public as well as SRWC members, but all attendees — candidates, SRWC members and members of the public must RSVP as outlined below. Otherwise, there is no guarantee of participation, of seating, or of a meal. Tickets are not sold at the door.

The primary election is scheduled for Oct. 24; the General election will follow on Nov. 21. Qualifying for office will be Sept. 8-10.

The first Slidell Republican Women’s Meet the Candidates luncheon, scheduled for Aug. 27, will provide networking and brief introductory remarks from all Republican candidates for state office.

These include: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, State Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, State Insurance Commissioner, State Public Service Commissioner, Senate District 1, Representatives Districts 76 and 90, and BESE District 1 (LA Board of Elementary and Secondary Education).

Deadline to RSVP for the August Meet the Candidates luncheon is: Aug. 24. Due to the large number of candidates this fall, there will not be a formal forum with questions and answers.

The second “Meet the Candidates” luncheon is scheduled for Sept. 24. It will provide similar networking and introductory remarks from all Republican candidates for parish offices. These include: parish president, parish council members in eastern St. Tammany, the Assessor, Clerk of Court, Coroner, Sheriff, and any other local offices.

Like the first luncheon, this event will not be held in a forum format. Deadline to RSVP for the September “Meet the Candidates” luncheon is Sept. 21.

All participating Republican candidates must follow a two-step registration with the SRWC:

First, all Republican

candidates for office in the fall primary election who wish to participate in the SRWC luncheon meetings must register with, and provide their contact information to, SRWC Program Chair Charlene Stein at cpstein@bellsouth.net.

Second, all Republican candidates for office in the primary election who wish to participate in the SRWC luncheon meetings must RSVP with SRWC Hospitality Chair Betty Hooper, at bettysuew@bellsouth.net. Cost of the luncheon is $20 per person, paid in advance, or at the door if pre-registered. Please note that the RSVP deadlines are Aug. 24 and Sept. 21. No tickets will be sold on the day of the events.

SRWC members actively volunteer to support and help Republican candidates for office in the upcoming elections. Any candidates who need assistance with card-writing, signs, walkers, phone-banking and other volunteer efforts need to contact SRWC Campaign Chair Lynn St. Jean at eugenestjean@bellsouth.net.

At these luncheons there will be a Silent Auction with the proceeds going to SRWC endeavors, primarily the scholarships awarded at the end of the year, in the name of former SRWC members, the late Pearl Williams and the late Cecelia Drennan.

Catherine "Cathy" Luckett Palmer, was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 4, 1937, died in Scottsboro, Alabama on September 5, 2015. She was preceded in death by her father, Raleigh Harlow Luckett and mother, Lucille Thomas Luckett. Her family includes her husband, Philip L. Palmer, sons; Donald H. Palmer(Esmerelda), Russell B. Palmer, daughters; Dianne P. McLain, Melody P. Gelpi(Patrick), grandchildren; David McLain(Jill), Kissy Palmer, Austin Dartez, Lukela Palmer, Maci Palmer, Laura Mayfield(Zeal), Aimee Gelpi, great grandchildren; Marshall McLain, Nolan McLain, and Ella Rose Denham, brother; Michael Luckett, Sr.(Laura); nephew; Michael Luckett, Jr., niece; Ellen Baker(Justin), great nieces; Evan and Laura Luckett, and special cousins; Lucy Hill and Susan Jahnke. She is a descendant of the Drayton Family- a First Family of South Carolina. Her childhood home was in Birmingham, Al. She attended the University of Alabama, where she joined Alpha Pi sorority and received a B.S. and Master's Degree in United States History and Political Science. She taught Constitutional Law and American History at Fairfax Hall, Waynesboro, Va, and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. While working toward her Postgraduate Degree at Tulane University in New Orleans, she met Philip L. Palmer. They were married on April 1, 1972. In 1976 they moved to Slidell, La. Cathy was a former President and Honorary Lifetime member of the Women's Republican Club of Slidell. She worked and volunteered on several St. Tammany Parish campaigns- including those for Bob Livingston, Liz Teague, Joan Hennessy, and Judge Patricia Hedges. She was also a former President and member of the Friends of the Slidell Library. In 2006, she relocated to Scottsboro, AL, with Philip. She continued her interest in the Women's Republican Club and was a member of a book club. An avid reader, Cathy was knowledgeable in many subjects. She especially enjoyed discussing historical events and political issues. Cathy was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
