Sen. Tom Schedler was in the spotlight at the third annual Lincoln/Reagan Day Banquet at Benedict's Plantation on Feb. 23.

Jeff Crouere, president of the Northshore Republican Men's Club, which sponsored the event, announced that Schedler was the recipient of the Republican of the Year award. Crouere presented Schedler with an engraved crystal ice bucket. He also lauded Schedler for his "tremendous accomplishments for the party."

A surprised Schedler said, "I had no earthly idea. How honored I am. I am deeply humbled." Schedler then recognized former Gov. Dave Treen as the "father of this party."

Earlier in the evening, Mike Stevens said the invocation and Parish President Kevin Davis led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, and for years Republican organizations have held a Lincoln Day dinner in the month of February. Ronald Reagan was born on Feb. 6, 1911, and the Northshore Republican Men's and Women's Clubs decided to honor Reagan as well. Crouere said that the banquet was named for Lincoln and Reagan because they are "the most popular presidents of all time."

Roger Villere, chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party, said that the party is thriving in Louisiana and emphasized the importance of recruiting quality candidates.

Featured speaker Dan Juneau, president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, spoke about money and budget issues and the insurance crisis. He compared the way that Florida explored the insurance issues after a disaster with Louisiana's response following the "evil twins Katrina and Rita."

Along with Crouere, Northshore Republican Men's Club officers are Hammy Gascon, first vice president; Ronnie Gracianette, second vice president; Mike Stevens, secretary; Frank Hester, treasurer; and board members Schedler, Alan Churchill, Addison Ellis, Mike Holland, Bren Bishop and Ray Canada.

Event co-sponsors and presidents of the organizations are: Bayou Women'sRepublican Club, Sharon Schad; Coalition of Republican Professionals, Stewart Shields; Mandeville Republican Women, Betty Oliver; Republican Party of St. Tammany, Stephanie Berault; and Slidell Republican Women's Club, Elizabeth Schneider.

Slidell's Williams named volunteer of year - United Way to honor councilwoman on Thursday

Slidell City Councilwoman Pearl Williams enjoys volunteering with different groups, meeting people and tackling various tasks to help others in the community, and now one of those organizations gets to show its appreciation with an official gesture.

United Way Serving St. Tammany will recognize Williams as the 2006 Volunteer of the Year during the 2006 United Way Victory Celebration on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Louisiana Grill in Mandeville. The event is by invitation.

Williams, who likes doing projects, especially those that benefit children, said she was shocked to learn of the award selection.

"My mother worked and did not have the extra time (to volunteer)," she said, noting that she does not have a job, other than her local government position. "I'm able to be involved and have the contacts that I enjoy." Having to decline requests for help, though, because of time limitations is difficult, she said.

United Way chose the active community volunteer for the special honor because of her "tireless dedication" to the organization, which several years ago set up the regional office of the United Way of Greater New Orleans, said Susan Revolta, United Way St. Tammany office manager in Covington. Williams, who has served on the St. Tammany United Way Leadership Council since 2005 and is an active fund-raiser, was a founding committee member for the annual Red Beans and Rice Cook-Off and decorations committee chairwoman for the Glitz, Glamour and Giving holiday kick-off event for United Way. She also began this year periodically visiting, evaluating and reviewing St. Tammany agencies funded by United Way.

Williams said that she has gained a more comprehensive understanding of the organization through volunteering, dispelling for her the common misconception that most money raised in St. Tammany Parish goes to United Way in New Orleans. She also has received from site visits first-hand knowledge of the "wonderful" community programs of the Youth Service Bureau and STARC.

Shirleen Carter, United Way Serving St. Tammany's executive director, said the dedicated volunteer never seeks recognition for her work but deserves it. She always is "willing and available" to serve others, irregardless of the capacity, she said.

Williams serves on the Children Wish Endowment board of directors, is past president of the Slidell Memorial Hospital Women's Health Alliance (formerly the Women's Health Foundation) and a member of the Slidell Women's Petroleum Cluband Slidell Women's Republican Club.

She has been chairwoman of the Children's Wish Endowment fund-raising fashion show for 18 of its 20 years and has been involved with the American Heart Association, Friends of Slidell Community Playground, Pediatric Foundation of the North Shore and the former Sen. Walter Boasso Advisory Committee.

Williams, who initially was elected to the Slidell City Council in 1982, fills an at-large position, representing the entire city upon election and re-election for a term expiring in 2010. She has been appointed to the 9-11 Memorial, SlidellBeautification and Garbage Review committees and served as chairwoman of the 1988 Slidell Centennial Committee.

She is a Leadership Slidell and New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute alumni, St. Tammany Municipal Association past president and member of Women in Municipal Government, National League of Cities and the Louisiana Municipal Association.

She has received awards from Leadership Slidell, NorthShore Regional Medical Center and Children's Wish and was an honorary member of the Slidell North Shore Rotary Club.

The New Iberia native moved to Slidell in 1972 from Tulsa, Okla. She and her husband, Jerry, have three children and four grandchildren.

Slidell businesswoman and educator Donna Faucheux has announced her candidacy for the 9th District seat on the St. Tammany Parish Council.

Faucheux, a Republican seeking her first political office, said, "My motivation for running is to make a difference in my community. I am not a politician, which I believe makes me a good candidate."

"I want to bring new and innovative ideas to help our parish and state move forward and grow,' she said. "While still addressing my district's agenda, I believe I will be able to work well with other members on the council and other local government officials to advance the cause of the parish."

The 9th District seat is being vacated by Barry Bagert, who is not running for re-election after six terms in office. The election is Oct. 20.

Faucheux said key issues that need to be addressed include drainage, traffic congestion, facilities for youth recreation and manageable economic growth for eastern St. Tammany.

She and her husband own Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream in Slidell. She is a former elementary school teacher who continues to work as a substitute teacher in the parish school system. Faucheux, who has a master's degree in business administration from Southeastern Louisiana University, also has worked as a financial manager.
