But tables were turned on a very surprised Strain, who was named Republican of the Year by the Northshore Republican Men's Club President Jeff Crouere. Previous award winners are state Sen. Tom Schedler and Sen. David Vitter.

The fourth annual Lincoln/Reagan Day Banquet, which was hosted by the Northshore Republican Men's and Women's Clubs, was held at Benedict's Plantation on Feb. 15. State Treasurer John Kennedy, the keynote speaker, talked about problems resulting from the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the increase in taxation, the health care budget, and "earmarks" for special projects. He underlined Louisiana's assets of location on the Gulf Coast, oil and gas, timber and agriculture. Kennedy emphasized the importance of "how much you demand of elective officials," and said, "Our people deserve a government as good as they are."

The Northshore Republican Men's Club officers are Crouere, president, Treasurer Frank Hester, Secretary Mike Stevens and board members Bren Bishop, SlidellCouncilman Ray Canada, Allen Churchill, Donahue, Addison Ellis, Hammy Gascon, Ronnie Gracianette and Mike Holland.

The Slidell Republican Women's Club recently held a luncheon and political forum.

Judgeship candidates for the Louisiana Supreme Court and for two divisions of the 22nd Judicial District Court, which includes St. Tammany and Washington parishes, made presentations to the members. The club held a forum in August and September.

A.J. Hand and Reggie Laurent, both vying for Division B of the Louisiana 22nd Judicial District Court also made presentations.

Candidates campaigning for Division C of the Louisiana 22nd Judicial District Court, Warren Montgomery, Edward Rapier and Rick Swartz, also spoke to the group.

Slidell Republican Women's Club President Karen Fandal was recognized as the 2008 Club Member of the Year at the meeting.

The award was presented by the St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee.

Fandal was presented with a recognition pin by local members Laura Leonard and Elizabeth Schneider.

Betty Guillot made a presentation on the Ranger Rosaries project. This involves rosaries made by Slidell Republican Women's Club members and sent to servicemen in Iraq and on stateside bases in Louisiana and Mississippi. The rosaries can be used by many religious denominations and are created of unique materials, such as parachute cord. Because they are not metallic, are silent and don't reflect light, they offer safety factors in the war zone.
