“Give women the vote!” and “Votes for Women” signs carried by early 20th century clad ladies in flowered hats will highlight the celebration at Koop Drive tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., recognizing the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment.
The Amendment reads, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
Although women in Louisiana had been voting for almost 50 years, it wasn’t until 1970 that the state ratified the original amendment. Mississippi was the last state to ratify the amendment, on March 22, 1984.
St. Tammany President Kevin Davis has proclaimed March 10 “League of Women Voters Making Democracy Work” Day. Davis said that more than half the voters in Louisiana and St. Tammany Parish are women.
The celebration tomorrow will include a “Suffragist March” lead by the Girls Scouts Louisiana East; a flag ceremony; “Failure is Impossible” play; proclamations; a tree-planting ceremony; and the Northshore Performing Arts Society will sing suffragist-era songs. The celebration is free and open to the public.
In addition, there will be an information table, light refreshments provided by the Junior League of Greater Covington, League of Women Voters suffrage post cards, Girl Scout cookies and lots of information and items will be available.
In addition, Davis and Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler are both expected to speak.
The public is encouraged to participate in period-era dress and bring a sign. However, don’t wear red-it was the color of the opposition. Susan Slifer, president of the LWVST, said she hopes to see students there, since most schools are off this week.
The celebration is sponsored by the League of Women Voters St. Tammany; American Association of University Women-Covington/ Mandeville; Divine Protectors of Endangered Pleasures (DIVAs); Girl Scouts of Louisiana East; Junior League of Greater Covington; Louisiana Federation of Republican Women: Bayou Lacombe, Mandeville, Professional Women St. Tammany, and Slidell RepublicanWomen’s Clubs; Northshore Democratic Women’s Club; St. Tammany Parish Library; and Women of Infinite Possibilities.
In addition to the celebration tomorrow, there will be a cocktail reception April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Benedict’s Plantation in Mandeville. Tickets are $45 per person or $90 per couple to benefit the Children’s Museum. For more information, visit www.lxvst.info or cal Sandra Slifer at 875-9388.

Granting women the right to vote forever changed our nation's political landscape. Area women's organizations will come together Wednesday for a reception at Benedict's Plantation in Mandeville to celebrate the 90th anniversary of this milestone.
The reception, which will start at 6:30 p.m., follows on the heels of the March 10 celebratory march by 10 women's groups in honor of the anniversary of the 19th amendment to the Constitution.
Tickets are $90 per couple, or $45 each, to coincide with the anniversary. Silver-, gold- and platinum-level tickets also are available for $190, $290 and $390, respectively. Proceeds will benefit the Children's Museum of St. Tammany.
"The museum represents the future of St. Tammany Parish," said Sandra Slifer, president of the League of Women Voters of St. Tammany. "If we can play a small role in providing a place for children to come have fun and be challenged, it's all for the better."
The reception is being hosted by the League of Women Voters; the Junior League of Greater Covington; the American Association of University Women (AAUW ) of Covington/Mandeville; the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women: Bayou Lacombe, Mandeville; Republican Professional Women of St. Tammany; Slidell Republican Women's Club; Women of Infinite Possibilities; and Divine Protectors of Endangered Pleasures (DIVAs).
The night will include a special menu by Benedict's Plantation, as well as donated floral arrangements of yellow and red roses. During the suffrage movement, Slifer said, yellow roses worn in a lapel indicated a person supported women's voting rights, while those who were anti-suffrage wore red roses.
Guests will enjoy songs from the suffrage era performed by members of the Northlake Performing Arts Society, as well as short portrayals of suffragists Lucretia Mott and Sojourner Truth, played by Covington City Councilwoman Francis Dunn, as well as Susan B. Anthony and Carrie Chapman Catt.
But the highlight of the evening will be a silent auction of 50 to 60 ballot boxes decorated by local and state elected officials and women community leaders. Box artists include, among others, Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Parish President Kevin Davis and his family, state Reps. John Schroder and Tim Burns, state Sen. Jack Donohue, Mandeville Mayor Donald Villere, Covington Mayor Candace Watkins, and Abita Springs Mayor Louis Fitzsimmons.
"We think it's going to be a fun night," Slifer said. "It is an anniversary worth celebrating because we would be living in a different world if women didn't have the right to vote."
The reception's dress code is business or cocktail attire. Tickets may be purchased at Braswell Drugs in Covington, at K-Gee's Restaurant or Aviva Massage in Mandeville, by contacting Slifer at 875.9388 or through members of the host organizations.
