The Slidell Republican Women's Club (SRWC) recently named its annual award winners for its Leadership recognition program and Scholarship program.
The Pearl Williams Superior Leadership Award this year was presented by SRWC member Beth Royer to Judge Scott Gardner. Gardner, of the 22nd Judicial District Court, Division G, has been in a leadership role throughout the community as well as serving as a District Attorney for 25 years. He has long been associated with Safe Harbor, Habitat for Humanity, Agenda for Children, and Amplify Youth, among many other endeavors.
Two winners this year each received the Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship Award, a project created a few years ago by Cecelia Drennan, the late wife of Slidell Mayor Freddie Drennan.
One winner was Simone Lazard, a recent graduate of Salmen High School who plans to major in marine biology. Her many community activities included Rainbow Child Care, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Slidell Beautiful, and the 21st Century After-School Program for children. Lazard could not be present for the program.
SRWC member Peggy Goertz presented the other scholarship winner, Margaret Morgan, a recent graduate of Northshore High School. Morgan plans to major in biology, and enter medical school in the future. At school and in the community she was active with Toys for Tots, Keep Slidell Beautiful, Children's Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and was with Girl Scouts for six years.
The Slidell Republican Women's Club not only supports local, state and national Republican candidates for elected office, but also is involved in several charitable endeavors.
Prospective new members may be interested in helping with various political campaigns; or with some of the year-long service committees, such as the Literacy Project, which includes distributing dictionaries to local school children. Other community service projects include: distributing school supplies to selected area public schools; working on the Pearl Williams/Cecelia Drennan Memorial Scholarship Committee; helping with the Pearl Williams Leadership Award Committee; and working on behalf of local and statewide Republican candidates for office. Those applying for SRWC membership must be registered Republicans.

Lynn St. Jean, president of the Slidell Republican Women's Club, has announced the date for the club's annual Christmas luncheon and auction for local clubmembers and their guests. This special seasonal luncheon will be held Dec. 5, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Pinewood Country Club, 405 Country Club Blvd., in Slidell.
Reservations for this event must be made by Dec. 2. The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person. Any cancellations must also be made by Dec. 2.
Walk-ins at all SRWC luncheon meetings are not guaranteed a place to sit or even a meal. Members not cancelling by the Dec. 2 deadline will be billed, if that place cannot be otherwise sold. Make reservations as early as possible to SRWC member Betty Hooper, at bettysuew@bellsouth.net.
Guests also are requested to donate a wrapped gift, with no name tag or identifiers, for the auction, limited to an approximate cost of $25.
Santa's elves, in the guise of St. Tammany Parish Councilman Gene Bellisario, Slidell Mayor Freddie Drennan and Fire Chief David Kuhn, will handle the auction. This year's luncheon will see the return of a previous SRWC tradition -- a special guest appearance by Santa Claus, a close associate of St. Tammany Parish Councilman Ritchie Artigue.
SRWC members are reminded that the 2014 dues are due, so bring your checkbook for the dues and the auction. The full membership is $30; an associate membership is $20.
