Republican forums slated

Slidell Women's Republican Club will host two forums for Republican candidates seeking public office in Slidell.

The first forum will focus on candidates seeking district seats on the Slidell City Council.

It will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Pinewood Country Club, 405 Country Club Blvd.

A second forum for Republican candidates running for Slidell police chief, Slidell mayor and at-large City Council seats.

It will be held Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. at Pinewood Country Club.

Lunch will be served at both forums. The cost is $10 per person.

Those persons planning to have lunch at Friday's forum must make reservations no later than Monday; and no later than Feb. 21 for the Feb. 25 forum.

The countdown has begun for Saturday's 1-cent sales tax election for the public schools.

Volunteers working to pass the tax this week will staff a phone bank, plant signs in lawns and employ other strategies to get voters to the polls.

Meanwhile, school administrators continue a daunting schedule of speaking engagements, including meetings with school faculties, parent groups and civic groups such as the Slidell Women's Republican Club.

Slidell Women's Republican Club has proclaimed Friday as Thelma Ouder Scogin Day.

Scogin will be honored at the club's luncheon meeting at 10 a.m. at Annabelle's restaurant on U.S. 11.

She is a longtime Republican who was a charter member of the local organization 26 years ago.

She and her husband, Ed Scogin, who served for more than 20 years as state representative for District 76, are Slidell natives.

Scogin has contributed innumerable hours working in the campaigns of Republicancandidates and has always been ready to share her opinions as a member of SlidellWomen's Republican Club.

Guest speaker at Friday's meeting is Brady Fitzsimmons, who is serving as a judge on the 22nd District Judicial Court and is a candidate for judgeship on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals.

Among the issues being discussed at the meeting will be the upcoming Spring Fest on the Bayou.

Gardner and Ronnie Kole will open their home, Chateau Chahta-Ima, for the May 22 fest.

The gala affair will feature dinner catered by Chateau Bleu, music by St. Margaret Mary Principal Bobby Ohler's band and boat rides on the bayou from 4 to 7 p.m.

Special guest will be Secretary of State Fox McKeithen.

Tickets are $25 a person. Reservations are required.

Members of the Slidell Women's Republican Club met recently at Annabelle's Restaurant to honor charter member Thelma Scogin and bid farewell to longtime member Marge Decrevel.

President Lynn Bowers presented Scogin with a plaque and a key to the city.

Vice President Bette Simpson, a charter member, recalled the many contributions Scogin has made to the club over the past 26 years, as well as the many hours she has spent campaigning for numerous Republican candidates.

Decrevel, who soon will move to Florida, was presented a plaque and key to the city.

District Judge Brady Fitzsimmons was the guest speaker at the meeting. Fitzsimmons gave an informative talk about how the court system is structured. Fitzsimmons, currently with the 22nd Judicial District, is now running for judgeship in the 3rd District of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal, which includes seven parishes.

New officers elected at the meeting were Simpson, president; Elizabeth Schneider, vice president; Cathy Palmer, recording secretary; Juanita Brinsmade, corresponding secretary; Joan Holmes, treasurer; Caroline Lewis, newsletter chairman; Denise Sieger, membership chairman; Agnes O'Bryan, campaign chairman; and June Erickson, program chairman.

They will be installed May 22 at the home of Gardner and Ronnie Kole. The installation will be conducted by Secretary of State Fox McKeithen at the club's "Spring Fest On The Bayou."

The fest will feature dinner catered by Chateau Bleu, music by Bobby Ohler's Band and boat rides on the bayou.

The public is invited. Tickets are $25 per person.

Slidell Women's Republican Club membership coffee was held Sept. 23 at the Bayou Liberty home of Agnes O'Bryan.

Members and guests were treated to a delicious brunch and then met with special guests, former Louisiana governors Buddy Roemer and Dave Treen, Louisiana Secretary of State Fox McKeithen and Louisiana Congressman Quentin Dastugue.

Several club members will attend the fall board meeting of the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women. The meeting will be held Oct. 21-22 at the Covington Holiday Inn.

A Friday afternoon "Nuts and Bolts" workshop will be conducted by Evelyn McPhail and a gala evening reception will be given at the home of Barbara Barnes. The business meeting will be held Saturday morning and the luncheon guest speaker will be WWL-TV4 news reporter Hoda Kotb.

The Slidell Women's Republican Club will hold its general membership meeting and luncheon Oct. 28 at Doug's Restaurant in Slidell.

The program will focus on volunteerism in this community.

Pam Gibson will offer four one-hour classes on the fundamentals skills of knitting.

Classes will be held today and Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 and 10 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The class is designed for adults and children, 10 years and older.

The fee is $25 per person, with a $10 discount for the second family member. Materials are an additional $10 per person.

One scholarship is available, Gibson said.

Slidell Republican Women's Club members have made a habit of supporting the Slidell Library.

The membership recently continued a club tradition by purchasing a copy of Jonathan Aitken's "Nixon: A Life" which they then donated to the library.

The gift was donated on behalf of the club by President Bette Simpson, Past President Lynn Bowers and Recording Secretary Cathy Palmer.

The book was accepted by Library Branch Manager Becky Taylor.

This is an annual event for the members of the Slidell Republican Women's Club.

A roundtable discussion on propaganda and the media, titled "Politicians, The Media and Public Policy - Who's the Chicken, Who's the Egg?" will be presented by the League of Women Voters of St. Tammany, on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in Room 203 of the Mandeville Medical Complex, 800 Heavens Drive in Mandeville.

Participants will be Suzanne Dobkin, radio station WWNO at the University of New Orleans; Dr. Roman Heleniak, Southeastern Louisiana University; Louis Campomenosi, Tulane University; and Dr. Norbert Davidson, Southern University of New Orleans.
