GEOLOGIST ENTERS 13TH DISTRICT RACE

Kathy Wiltenmuth, past president of the Military Road Alliance homeowners association near Slidell, recently announced her candidacy for the 13th District seat on the St. Tammany Parish Police Jury.

Other candidates for the seat in the Oct. 21 primary include incumbent Gary Rinck and parish Planning and Zoning Commission member Gene Bellisario.

Wiltenmuth said the first problem she wants to tackle is improving drainage. She said her experience as a geologist qualifies her to deal with the technical aspects of water runoff. "It seems like a geologist is better equipped to do it than an accountant," she said, in reference to Rinck's profession.

She also said that people in her district, which includes the Military Road and Eden Isles areas, need better representation. "I feel people can trust me. I'm not doing this to benefit me. I'm doing this for the right reason, to benefit the community."

Wiltenmuth is the immediate past president of the alliance, which represents 4,500 homeowners in 12 subdivisions. She also was secretary of the organization in 1993 and is a member of the group's education committee.

She received a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of New Orleans and a master's in geology from Tulane University. She is also working on a master's in biology from Southeastern Louisiana University, she said.

Wiltenmuth, who is married and has two children, is a member of the Greater Slidell Area Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, the Society of Wetland Scientists, and the Slidell Women's Republican Club.

She was born in New Orleans and moved to Slidell in 1986.

St. Tammany youngsters will demonstrate their sewing skill by competing in the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Sew With Cotton contest.

The contest is open to all St. Tammany youths, who will be asked to complete a garment or outfit and model their work in a parishwide fashion show.

Wednesday is the deadline for all garments (and a written description of the garment) to be delivered to the Louisiana Cooperative Extension office, at 33rd and North Florida streets in Covington.

Contestants who are 13 and younger will make a garment of 100 percent cotton fabric.

Contestants 14 and older as of will make an outfit of 100 percent cotton fabric.

Lining, interfacing and trims may be of other suitable materials, contest organizer Ruth Langford said.

Garments will be judged on construction during the first segment of the contest and on fit and appearance during the second segment.

The second portion of the contest is a Sew With Cotton Fashion Revue, which will be held Oct. 6 at noon on the St. Tammany Parish Fair stage. All garments must be modeled by their makers.

The goal of this contest is for young people to gain knowledge and experience in clothing construction skills.

For information, call Langford at 892-2208.

SYMPHONY SOCIETY IS LETTER PERFECT

Newspaper November 2, 1995 | Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA)

520 Words | Readability: Lexile: 1330, grade level(s): >12

Slidell Symphony Society promised an encore of its winning 1994 Celebrity Spelling Bee performance and, last Thursday, the trio delivered.

Helping the championship team of Dolores Calkins, Jerry Chauffe and Anne Flotte, sponsored by Slidell Easy Pay Tire Store, capture a second consecutive title were Slidell Women's Republican Club delegates Elizabeth Schneider, Bette Simpson and Cathy Palmer, who stumbled during the 15th round of competition.

But you could hardly blame them. Could you spell "urceolate"? Neither could they.

The Republican team should have been proud to have made it so far in a spell-off that included such mind-numbing challenges as "jardiniere" (a planter) and "azimuth" (a term used in astronomy calculations).

*** Close, but no cigar ***

But no one ever said raising $5,000 for the St. Tammany Literacy Foundation was going to be easy. Still, giving it one heck of a try were:

Third place - St. Margaret Mary representatives Charlotte Cooper, Robyn Thibodeaux and Susan Kluger, stumped by "potiche."

Fourth place - Rotary Club of Northshore Slidell delegates Gil Ganucheau, George Cry and Eugenia Byrd, who failed to come up with a spelling for the above-mentioned "jardiniere."

Fifth place - Even a close spelling on "aficionado" did not protect Slidell Sentry-News staffers Kevin Chiri, Shannon McDaniel and Michael Gorman from pink slips produced by master of ceremonies Terry Maddox, their boss.

Sixth place - Slidell Police Department administrative assistant George Phillips, Capt. Robert "Doc" Holliday and Chief Ben Morris were ejected after a miscue on "adiaphorous." Slidell's finest were sponsored by Lowry-Dunham, Case and Vivien.

Seventh place - "Idiosyncrasy" spelled failure for the Davis Electric team represented by St. Tammany Police Jurors Kevin Davis, Barry Bagert and Steve Stefancik.

Eighth place - OK. So who in the entire St. Margaret Mary School gymnasium could spell "azimuth"? Obviously, no one on The Times-Picayune spelling team comprised of St. Tammany bureau chief Ron Thibodeaux, columnist Sheila Stroup and staff writer Shalmali Pal.

Ninth place - Alton Elementary School should have won a prize for the best cheering section, but had to settle for a ninth-place finish following the incorrect spelling of "perspicacious" by Laura Hass, Vivian Garvin and Beth Arthur. Alton was sponsored by First NBC.

10th place - NorthShore Regional Medical Center representatives Connie Chester, Mary Beth Burkard and Cynthia Leake were tripped up on "provincial."

11th place - Rotary Club of Slidell representatives Adrian Flores, Shannon Whitehurst and Philip Beben held on until the fourth round but missed on "icicle."

12th place - Latter & Blum delegates Bonnie Parr, Carol Charbonnet and Tanya Witchen were ousted by "vengeance."

13th place - Allan Beaucoudray, Shirlyn Rotolo and Sam Vreeland of Lakeshore Chrysler Plymouth missed on "surveillance."

*** Slip of the tongue ***

It's tough being the first team eliminated from a spelling bee - especially if you're bumped in the first round by a "warm-up" word.

But imagine the embarrassment when you know - without question or hesitation - exactly how to spell the word and are sent hurtling into the field of wannabes by a slip of the tongue.

Such was the fate of Hibernia's Ray Brinson, Rick Lavigne and Lance Umberger, who finished 14th, gunned down by a misspelling of "missile."

I'll give you a hint: Their version had only one "i."
