The Slidell Republican Women's Club (SRWC) recently installed new officers for 2010. The luncheon was also the setting for the club's annual auction of donated gift items which helps fund the activities of the SRWC for the coming year.

Outgoing president Karen Fandal handed over the gavel to incoming president Donna Guidry, who recently served as hospitality chairwoman.

Making up the new Executive Board are Donna Guidry, president; Mona Mathias, vice president; Anne McCabe, secretary; Cecelia Drennan, treasurer; Charmaine Swartz, membership; Stephanie Berault, campaigns; Lisa Abshire, programs; and Karen Fandal, newsletter.

The annual auction serves as the major fundraiser for the club's community projects throughout the year, such as the Pearl Williams Memorial Scholarship led by SRWC member Cecelia Drennan; and the Literacy Project, led by SRWC member Lynda Donaldson, through which dictionaries are distributed to area students at selected public schools.

Another club endeavor is the Elephant Trunk Community Service project, chaired by SRWC member Betty Guillot. This effort includes such diverse projects as distributing school supplies to selected area public school, to creating and sending specialized rosaries to area servicemen at home and overseas.

Through its fundraising, the SRWC also supports Project Graduation.

The Slidell Republican Women's Club also actively supports area Republicancandidates for office and provides assistance during election time and encourages voters to go out and vote.

Prospective new members are welcome, and can choose to participate in any of these projects or to serve in other capacities such as hospitality or maintaining the club's scrapbook.

The Slidell Republican Women's Club last year established a scholarship in the memory of the late Pearl Williams, who served on the Slidell City Council until the time of her death.

This year, the SRWC is awarding two Pearl Williams scholarships to honor the late city councilwoman, and the deadline to apply is April 16. Applications are available in the counselors' offices in five eastern St. Tammany Parish high schools.

According to Scholarship Program Chairwoman Celia Drennan, these two scholarship awards will recognize outstanding senior girls who have demonstrated not only academic achievement, but also responsibility, leadership and involvement in the community through civic, church or school activities. Each recipient must be a graduating senior in good standing in May 2010, having achieved at least a 2.5 grade-point average at Northshore, Pearl River, Pope John Paul II, Salmen or Slidellhigh schools.

The scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, will be payable to the institution of higher learning where the recipients have been admitted and intend to further their education. This includes a college or university, junior or community college, or technical institute.

For consideration, the application packet, essay, letters of recommendation, official transcript and all required documentation must be postmarked by April 16.

The packet must be sent to: Slidell Republican Women's Club, Re: Pearl Williams Memorial Scholarship Program, P. O. Box 1777, Slidell, LA 70459.

All packets postmarked by the deadline will be assigned an anonymous student code number and then evaluated by the Scholarship Committee. All information will be kept confidential. Points may be weighted by the evaluators for extent of community service, proof of voter's registration, membership in a political organization, and extent of volunteer service to a political campaign, among other considerations. The Slidell Republican Women's Club has the sole responsibility for selecting recipients, based on the criteria set forth by the SRWC.

Further criteria include that the student must currently be a resident of St. Tammany Parish, must have attended a St. Tammany Parish high school in the Slidell area for a minimum of three full, consecutive semesters, preceding the date of the application, and must be classified as a full-time student.

The application packet must include three letters of recommendation from the following individuals (including their contact information), who cannot be related to the applicant: A teacher or administrator at student's current high school; a community leader in eastern St. Tammany area, who can vouch for student's nonpaid community service/volunteer activity; and a business person in the eastern St. Tammany area, who can vouch for student's nonpaid community service/volunteer activity.

The scholarship acknowledgements will be made at the Awards Program at the recipients' high schools in the spring. The actual monetary award will be in the form of a check made payable to the college or university of each recipient's choice, and will be awarded to the recipients at the May general membership meeting of SWRC, to which recipients and their parents will be invited.

Further information is available from the counselors in the five local high schools listed. Additional information also is available by calling 985.502.5677.
