Community service, not awards, drives Slidell Councilwoman Pearl Williams. But they’re nice just the same.

Williams was selected from seven prestigious nominees to receive the Athena award, sponsored locally by Levis Chevrolet Cadillac to "celebrate the potential of women as valued members and leaders of the community." The award was presented during Wednesday’s general membership meeting of the Greater Slidell Chamber of Commerce.

Among a long list of organizations that have benefited from Williams’ involvement and direction are the St. Tammany Municipal Association, Slidell Beautification Committee, Slidell Women’s Republican Club, Slidell Women’s Petroleum Club, Women in Municipal Government, the Pediatric Foundation of the Northshore, United Way Leadership Board, 9/11 Memorial Committee, Children’s Wish Endowment, and the Slidell Community Playground project. In addition to the Athena, she also has received the Leadership Slidell Community Steward Award, NorthShore Regional Community Service Award, and the Children’s Wish "Straight from the Heart" Award.

Nominated for the award by past Athena recipient Suzanne Parsons Stymiest, director of the parish office of governmental and cultural affairs, Williams applauded the contributions of all the nominees.

"They all have made such a difference in this community. This is what Slidell is about. It’s not about receiving this award. It’s about giving to the community," Williams said.

Also nominated for the award were Dianne Baham, executive director of the St. Tammany Association for Retarded Citizens; Caroline Bainger, senior systems analyst with Lockheed Martin Manned Space Systems; Connie Born, owner and operator of Mardi Gras Mischief; Chris Kaufmann, chief of fire prevention for St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1; Dr. Maria Pons, pediatric neurologist with NorthShore Regional Medical Center’s Pediatric Neurology Center; and St. Tammany School Superintendent Gayle Sloan.

Also recognized during the chamber’s Second Wednesday luncheon at Trinity’s Banquet and Reception Hall was Dave Kaufmann of KB Kaufmann, recipient of the Small Business of the Year award. This award is given to a business that has demonstrated ethical leadership and corporate stewardship, made a difference in the community, and contributed to the advancement of important economic and social goals.

Kaufmann has been a member of the chamber since 2001 and has participated in events ranging from the fun -- such as the popular chamber golf tournament and Jazz Feast celebration -- to the functional -- serving on the chamber’s business support and development committees, board of directors, and chairman of the board. His company also has been involved in numerous community service projects including the Slidell Community Playground project at Heritage Park.

"It’s an honor to be a part of this community and watch it grow," Kaufmann said. "The community playground project was especially an eye-opener for me -- seeing how people can pull together in this community to make things happen."

Also nominated for the prestigious award were Dianne Baham and St. Tammany Association for Retarded Citzens; and Ralph Kastner Jr., Tuff Equipment Rentals.

In other business at the Second Wednesday luncheon, chamber board of directors Chairwoman Theresa Risley reminded members and guests to purchase tickets as soon as possible for the Jazz Feast with the Chamber. The popular event will be held April 29 at 7 p.m. at The Continental. Tickets, $100, include dinner, music, dancing to the music of Jamm and Redline, an open bar for two, and one chance at a $10,000 elimination drawing. For ticket information, call 643-5678.

The Slidell Women's Republican Club recently awarded its 2005 Superior Leadership Award to Capt. Rob Callahan of the Slidell Police Department to recognize his 20 years of dedication to the department and to the Slidell community.

Superior Leadership Award chairwoman Mary O'Neil presented a plaque to Callahan during the club's May 20 meeting at Doug's Restaurant in Slidell. The clubmade a $100 donation in Callahan's name to the Crisis Pregnancy Help Center in Slidell, a charity he selected. It is the club's most prestigious award, and the recipient is selected by membership vote. It is open to men and women of any political party affiliation.

Callahan has served the Police Department in many ways, and perhaps the most successful of his projects has been the "Booze 'N' Cruise, You Lose!" program that educates teenagers in order to prevent alcohol-related automobile accidents.

Callahan started an anti-drug education program in schools 20 years ago that taught students shocking facts about the results of drinking and driving, and in 1987 partnered with the Junior Auxiliary of Slidell to lead the Booze 'N' Cruise program. The aggressive program to target underage drinking has grown in popularity, and Callahan has traveled all over the country with fellow program speakers to touch the lives of more than 200,000 teenagers and adults.

"We look for that special hero," O'Neil said about the award. "He is beloved; he is respected; he is esteemed." She added that Callahan is a humble recipient. "Your humility endears us all the more to you."

"I do what I do for the love of the community and the people," Callahan said. He thanked the club and his wife, Adrienne, for supporting him while he worked long hours over the years. "This is my community; this is where my family and friends are. I love Slidell."

Also nominated for the award and recognized at the meeting was Bill Mauser, chairman of the Slidell Clean City Advisory Committee which organized cleanups this spring to beautify the city and raise awareness of a growing litter problem.

Club President Mary Bishop led the meeting. Guest speaker was Don Fulham, an investment representative in Slidell. Fulham spoke to the group and answered questions about Social Security issues, how to prevent credit card fraud, the importance of regularly checking for credit report for errors, Medicare and other financial topics.

New officers for the 2005-06 year were installed at the meeting by state Rep. M.P. "Pete" Schneider III. They are: Elizabeth Schneider, president; Betty Guillot, vice president; Ann Morel, treasurer; Beth Royer, secretary; Donna Guidry, campaign chairwoman; Deborah Thompson, programs chairwoman; Susan Carpenter, newsletter chairwoman; and Mary O'Neil, membership chairwoman. Suzanne Crow, president of the Louisiana Federation of Republican Women, presented a president's pin to Elizabeth Schneider and a past president's pin to Bishop.

The club meets on the third Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at area restaurants. For more information or to join, call Schneider at 863-6161.

SLIDELL SENTRY-NEWS

SLIDELL - Republicans in St. Tammany Parish will gather together Saturday night to honor U.S. Sen. David Vitter for his service to the Republican Party.

The Northshore Republican Men's Club will honor Vitter as the first recipient of the "Republican of the Year" Award for his work advancing the party locally.

"Since Vitter is the first Republican senator since Reconstruction, he encompasses St. Tammany and has done more to further the cause of the Republican party in Louisiana," said Mike Stevens, secretary of the Northshore Republican Men's Club. "He achieved something no one had done before when he won that Senate seat."

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Trinity's Reception and Banquet Hall in Slidell. A social hour with elected officials will begin at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will follow. On the evening's menu will be crab bisque, beef tenderloin medallions and jumbo shrimp.

Tickets are $50 per person or $95 per couple. Tables can be reserved for $600 each and table sponsors will be recognized in the event program. Reservations are necessary since seating is limited.

"This event is for anyone who is a political activist or an aspirant throughout St. Tammany Parish," Stevens said. "There is no doubt Trinity's will be the place to be in Slidell Saturday night."

A portion of the event's proceeds will be donated to the families of St. Tammany residents on active military duty in Afghanistan or Iraq through the Support Our War Heroes Foundation, which was founded in Slidell. This foundation helps those severely injured in uniform with unmet needs.

The event is co-sponsored by various women's organizations such as Bayou Republican Women's Club, Coalition of Republican Professionals, Mandeville Republican Women's Club, North Lake Republican Women's Club, St. Tammany Professional Women's Club and Slidell Republican Women's Club.

The evening's entertainment will be provided by the Bobby Ohler Trio.
