Marge Decreval, president of the Slidell Women's Republican Club, remembers the time she was unable to vote because she was registered as a Republican.

"That really annoyed me," she said, referring to the time when Republicanregistration was so small that a victory in the Democratic primary was tantamount to victory in the general election. "I was really delighted to help make a change in politics and become involved in it."

Organized in 1967 to help build up the local Republican party, the club now boasts a membership of 75 registered Republican women, and several male associates.

"Republican women have been very effective in Louisiana in creating a strong Republican Party," said Betty Simpson, campaign chairwoman. "The one thing we have accomplished is balance in government and a fresh viewpoint."

"We've come a long, long way, baby," said June Erickson, membership chairwoman. "Today, more than 30 percent of all the registered voters in St. Tammany Parish are registered as Republicans."

Over the years, the club has seen a number of its members elected to public office, including members of the St. Tammany Parish School Board, Slidell City Council and the St. Tammany Parish Police Jury. During recent elections, there were nine people in the club who either were running for office or the wives or mothers of candidates, Decreval said.

"We are here to help build up the Republican Party and give us a conduit into Republican campaigns and activities and to encourage more women into politics," Decreval said. "We have also gone to Mississippi and Covington many, many times to help the Republican candidates.

"The club's primary thrust is campaign hours - working for the Republican Party, club and candidates," Simpson said. "We have a good record in the last few years with the number of (Republican) candidates here in St. Tammany Parish."

At the national convention in Cincinnati, the club received the Gold Award for its accomplishments, Simpson said. The award is based on membership, activities and programs, and the number of hours spent working for candidates.

Luncheon meetings are held the fourth Friday of each month at various local restaurants. The club also holds an occasional night meeting or party.

Money raised from the club's fund-raisers, which include fashion shows, raffles and an annual Chinese auction, is donated to candidates' campaigns or is used to assist needy families. In addition, the club supports the Rainbow Child Care Center with baskets at Christmas and Easter.

Annual membership dues are $15 per person, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for associate membership.

Dues include membership in the local club as well as the Louisiana and National Federation of Republican Women and includes several monthly newsletter and magazine subscriptions.

Membership is open to any registered Republican in the area.

For information, contact Decreval at 643-6102 or Erickson at 643-8768.
